- Renovations Update
Yes, Virginia, that's a new roof going on the old education wing - next to the new back entry.
That pitched roof was installed almost 20 years ago and doesn't have much life remaining in it. So, as part of the Renovation Plan approved oh so long ago, that roof is being replaced as the new entry roof is being installed.
On a related note, insulation is being installed at the very moment this article is being written. That means that now the entire office wing is weather tight. This should finally bring down the heating and air conditioning costs.
Thanks to the staff who have endured weeks of displacement while the work is being done.
We know this is confusing and disruptive. If you have any questions, call the church office at 492-9065 and we'll try to answer.
- Word [WURD] of the Week
Rapture
ap-chuhr\ Who is left and who is leaving?
Things are wrapping up for me - ending - here at Atonement and with the Presbyterians. Of course, my life will not end once I leave here, and your lives will go on as well. (My internship's not that big an ending!) But our relationship together as it is here will end. However, I will not be raptured back to Minnesota. And none of us will be raptured to heaven.
The concept of rapture - being beamed to heaven on the last day -- isn't based in Scripture but rather in popular culture. Endings are scary and this is one doozie of a story to cobble together from bits of Scripture that talk about end times. We believe in a promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ. And while this may not involve a “beam me up, Scotty” Hollywood ending, I dare say it's a way more spectacular ending with a twist at the end: new life.
- Appleseed Youth Theater
This past weekend, Scene One - Appleseed Productions' youth theatre program - presented its 7th orginal summer production. This year's show, titled Night of the Living Dolls, was written, built, and performed by the more than 20 participants of this summer's Scene One program.
Scene One is a program for high school age and early college age young adults (approximately ages 14 - 21) with an interest in the theatre. Established in the Fall of 2002, the program is built around the annual summer program. The program also seeks to offers its participants opportunities throughout the rest of the year to experience live theatre together at reduced prices and experience enriching additonal theatre-based features.
Scene One is made possible by a generous grant from The Lutheran Charities Appeal of the Central Crossroads Conference of the Upstate NY Synod, ELCA and by the generous support by parents and friends of the participants.
