- Saint Patrick - March 17, 2010
According to legend, St. Patrick taught the Irish the concept of the Trinity using the three leaves of the shamrock.
I must confess that being of Polish-German descent, when I think of St. Patrick's Day the things that come to mind are Ireland, clover, leprechauns, and of course in Syracuse ...green beer. So was I ever surprised to find out that the real Patrick (Latin: Patricius) was not a native to the Emerald Isle at all. Rather, when he was sixteen he was kidnapped by Irish pirates from his home in Roman occupied Britain and was kept as a slave in Ireland. After six years he escaped his captivity and returned to Britain. However for the sake of Ireland and the gospel he returned to Ireland as a free-man and worked tirelessly as a missionary and reputedly baptized "thousands." Life however for Patrick wasn't a bed of shamrocks. Being a foreigner, and a Christian, made him an enemy of the local pagan kings who on at least one occasion beat him. Although today it's impossible to tell for sure which traditions about Patrick are true and which are exaggerations of an understandably proud people, one thing is certain: never be surprised if God asks you to witness to the very last people you may want to see; they very well may name a holiday for you.
